Samson’s Real Weakness
Samson’s real weakness was not his hair.
And Samson went down to Timnath, and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines
During the wedding feast he propounds a riddle backed by a hefty bet, she worms the answer out of him to give to the guests.
Then went Samson to Gaza, and saw there an harlot, and went in unto her.
Which allows the Gazites to set up an ambush for him
And finally,
And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.
And the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and said unto her, Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lieth, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him: and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver.
And Delilah said to Samson, Tell me, I pray thee, wherein thy great strength lieth, and wherewith thou mightest be bound to afflict thee.
And Samson said unto her, If they bind me with seven green withs that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.
Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green withs which had not been dried, and she bound him with them.
Now there were men lying in wait, abiding with her in the chamber. And she said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he brake the withs, as a thread of tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So his strength was not known.
And Delilah said unto Samson, Behold, thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: now tell me, I pray thee, wherewith thou mightest be bound.
And he said unto her, If they bind me fast with new ropes that never were occupied, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.
Delilah therefore took new ropes, and bound him therewith, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And there were liers in wait abiding in the chamber. And he brake them from off his arms like a thread.
And Delilah said unto Samson, Hitherto thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: tell me wherewith thou mightest be bound. And he said unto her, If thou weavest the seven locks of my head with the web.
And she fastened it with the pin, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awaked out of his sleep, and went away with the pin of the beam, and with the web.
And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thine heart is not with me? thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth.
And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death;
That he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother’s womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.
And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath shewed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand.
And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him.
And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the Lord was departed from him.
But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house.
It’s interesting to think about hair as a covering and what being uncovered euphemized in the Old Testament. It is also useful to think about being shorn as a state appropriate for sheep, but not for someone like Samson who was supposed to be a shepherd. His leadership failures were his failure to lead himself and his failure to lead, instead of being led, in his home.
Otherwise quite good people and good institutions, even ones that are basically holy like Samson was, can have near-fatal flaws. Even, I fear, ourselves. It must be a nice problem in divine economy, when someone is a mixed bag of the holy and the wicked, whether to bless the one or to reprove the other.

In my opinion, Samson’s real weakness was his hubris. He thought nothing could bring him down, and acted accordingly. Pride, the vice of heroes.
It’s pretty clear from his earlier life that he had determination and bravery in spades (300 foxes caught alive? Really? 1,000 Philistines slain with the jawbone of an ass?).

Look at E.C. trying to elevate the discourse. Pphht.

One of the byproducts/consequences of lust and fornication seems to be stupidity.
IMO, his supernatural strength and speed were not directly caused by his hair. I think that was just the token. Rather, supernatural gifts come from the Lord through the Spirit.
Samson’s offenses, that disqualified him from his gifts, didn’t (merely?) include letting his hair be cut. He sinned long before that. The Lord delayed removing the gifts until the token was removed; that delay perhaps being an opportunity to repent.

Foxes and the jawbone affair…. Supernatural speed as well as strength is also a spiritual gift. One such event is Elijah running ahead of Ahab’s chariots for the approximately 20 miles from Mt. Carmel to Jezreel in 1 King’s 18:46. Given that they were trying to beat the rain, vv 44-45, the horses were likely going faster than a walk.

So as not to elevate the conversation too much, here’s an exercise you parents could play with your children.
Take the Incredibles family. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_The_Incredibles_characters
Just the main family, not the supporting characters, though maybe it would work for them too — I haven’t thought them through.
Exercise: Find a scriptural character whose miracle or spiritual gift matches the superpower of each of the members of the Incredible family:
Bob Parr, Mr. Incredible. Superhuman strength and stamina. Okay, this is a gimme… Samson.
Helen Parr, Bob’s wife, Elastigirl. I can’t find an actual match. But if you parse one verse from Exodus in an immodest sophomoric joke manner, it could fit. The wild-child son of a pastor taught me this one when we were in Junior High.
Their children:
Violet Parr. Invisibility. Force field. Levitate things.
Dash Parr. Speedster. And can run over water without submerging.
Jack-Jack Parr. Shapeshifter.

It is interesting to see people criticize “The Chosen One” trope in fiction. Yet, in the Bible, there are a great many failed “Chosen Ones”.
Samson is an example, but so is Saul, David, Solomon and even Israel itself!
