Harold Bloom identifies a parallel text to the Book of Mormon

April 14th, 2010 by Bertie

What with one thing and another I cannot say I have dipped much into either–the plots fail to grip, dash it, the Wooster taste literaire running rather more to clues and sprightly murders–but is the Book of Mormon really all that similar to the Lord of the Rings? Mine eyes goggle like billy-o. At 20-1 the idea is still a rank outsider.

Harold Bloom said that Joseph Smith was one of the unique and greatest religious geniuses of America. He also compared the Book of Mormon to Kabbalah.
Of course, South Park Broadway Musical of the Book of Mormon will be irreverent, but will bring more people to see what we’re about. Remember in the South Park movie that when all the religious people burning in hell asked which church was correct, they were told “the Mormons.” So it isn’t all that bad. Sometimes.

What I appreciate about the South Park creators is while they may mock Mormons mercilessly, they also mock everyone else mercilessly. Even Muslims which puts them ahead in courage over most of the “fearless”, envelope pushing art community.
