Towards a Mormon jurisprudence? I never thought of Joseph Smith as one of those beaky legal types, handing out fines for the lightest causes, and burying advice on socage-in-chief in the Book of Mormon, coming it the heavy with this ‘and what explanation do you give for yourself, Mr. Wooster’ stuff, when really I was speeding very moderately, if at all, but they tell me its so. I really like that essay. I particularly like the suggestion that, while all truth is with God, our imperfect view of it makes room for experimenting, for seeking and for a common law based on the lessons of the past. What else is scripture but what Hugh Nibley described it as — the field notes of the human race in their millennia of experiences with the divine?
