How Would it Feel to Be a Nephite?

October 01st, 2024 by G.

Here’s some perspective on Nephite chronology.  All I have done is take the events of Nephite history from the perspective of a Nephite at the time of Christ’s coming to the Americas and how far in the past it would have felt by relating it to events in our past from the perspective of 2024.  I am just following the standard chronology in the Book of Mormon notes.

When we read the Book of Mormon it gives you a compressed feel for the events, which come with a bewildering succession of wars and murders and so on.  But to the perspective of a Nephite in 33 AD, much of this would have happened long, long ago.  There would have been a handful of old people who remembered Samuel the Lamanite.  No one would remember Hagoth.  Captain Moroni would have been a figure of myth.  Ancient history all.

With Ronald Reagan’s reelection happening in 1984, something to put in that empty space for the Church that year would be the calling of Russell M. Nelson and Dallin H. Oaks to the Twelve, filling vacancies left by LeGrand Richards and Mark E. Petersen.

The missionary age change happened in 2012, which would be the same year Obama was reelected.

As for 2001 on the Church front, that was the year between completing the goal of having 100 temples dedicated and announcing the Perpetual Education Fund.
