Stronger than Steel

A modern day parable of the refiner’s fire:
If you treat wood so that it partially destroys the inner structure, then subject it to heat, and pressure, it ends up stronger than steel.
Can literally stop bullets.

You can also treat wood with simple chemicals (don’t remember which, but widely available) to make it almost as transparent as glass.
I want a house made with some of that densified wood. In tests, the exterior layer charred, but didn’t burn, in conditions similar to a house fire. It did better than structural steel. If we could figure out how to process wood this way at a commercial level, the quality and durability of our buildings would go up drastically.
