County Commissioner in Maryland Votes to Reduce Head Start Funds

From the Washington Post:
“The first thing Frederick County Commissioner Paul Smith does when explaining his controversial views about a woman’s proper place is to hand out a pamphlet from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”

What a rotten reason for voting to defund Head Start. I wish he could have had the good sense to leave the Church out of it.
A much better reason to vote to defund Head Start is that studies show it to be an utter waste of money, so far as helping the tots be better prepared for school is concerned.

I kinda doubt most Head Start kids come from stable, two-income, second-income optional homes.
Like Vader said, the better reason is that the gains from Headstart are small and temporary.

Don’t misunderstand me. I think kids need their mothers, but I also think individual circumstances may require adjustment.
And I like the idea of funding programs that help tots who are born into less than ideal situations. I just don’t think Head Start has proven at all effective as such a program. I suspect LDS Family Services has a much better track record.
