Ordinances are Brown M&Ms

July 08th, 2026 by G.

Ordinances are brown M&Ms, and a lot of commandments are too.

It’s a check to see who is really paying attention.  Who says they want in, but don’t.

Think about the various excuses and justifications people have for not doing them.

I don’t go to church because I get closest to God on the golf course.

Now apply that elsewhere.

Hey, man, we are here for you.  Anything you need?

Can you just come by more often?  I get pretty lonely these days.

Nah, man, I feel the closest to you on the golf course.

Is this referring to the “no brown M&Ms” clause in Van Halen’s contracts? It was completely arbitrary and was included so they would have an easy way of checking who had actually read the contract. But the golf course example doesn’t seem to fit with that meaning.

It seems pretty clear in the original post: “It’s a check to see who is really paying attention.”

Those who go golfing (or camping or whatever) instead of Church aren’t really paying attention.

WJT,
fair enough. I’m riffing on the broader theme that ‘having to actually do stuff exposes the reality of your motivation’
Which is all of mortality broadly speaking

Yes, this tracks with my thinking as well. There are other aspects—if one wishes to live in a world where words matter, they should act like that now—but there is also the extremely generous, “if you’re swearing undying loyalty, you ought to be able to check this box”.
