Meekness versus Humility

May 12th, 2026 by G.

I have been thinking more about the difference between meekness and humility, especially on the commenter formerly known as Brackets’ comment, and I realized something:

Jesus explicitly calls himself meek, but he never calls himself humble.

With no basis other thanĀ  my own gut, I think ‘meek’ is something like ‘not asserting every claim to which your power or status or simple justice entitle you,’ whereas ‘humility’ is something like ‘not too big for your britches’

It would be nice to have access to Heaven’s dictionary, as well as Heaven’s atlas.

Truman G Madsen in “The Joy of the Lord Is Your Strength” once said the opposite of meekness is ‘demanding-ness’. I think you’re on the right track

Whereas humility is IMO more about recognizing your limits, taking criticism, not thinking too much of yourself and taking yourself too seriously and so on
