Jeffrey R. Holland Has Made it to the Top of the Climb

He was gifted. No one is indispensable, but some are irreplaceable. We will not have his like as a writer and deliverer of talks again. Some of them were genuine literary and spiritual masterpieces. He was the guy that first made me understand the 18th C. taste for reading sermons.
Off the top of my head, Where Justice, Love, and Mercy Meet — the title of this post is a reference to it–
and An High Priest of Good Things to Come
One of the least of his techniques was to incorporate lines from hymns without highlighting that he was doing so.
I will miss him a lot until I also reach the top.

The photo highlights that for many of us in our 50s or 60s, Jeff Holland was our BYU president, a role from which he preached to us many times. For many in their 60s or 70s, Dallin Oaks was their president. We have benefited from an extended public baseline with them that started a decade before each was called to be an apostle.
That is also the case with Henry B. Eyring. Friday night I brought up with my family that of those who signed the Proclamation to the World regarding the family, three were still alive. The next morning, two. It will be interesting to see a decade from now if the Proclamation will continue in use, with an extended life like the Articles of Faith, or if it will be more like most statements and teaching tools with its place taken by what the living prophets and apostles will teach. Elder Rasband said that when he became one of the Twelve, he was told, “Your name isn’t signed under this, but it’s your statement now.”
