Dress in White Satin

July 03rd, 2025 by G.

My brain, ever the puppy dog, woke me up at 4 AM to share a parody on modesty it had composed, apparently in response to a dream we were having about boring speeches.

Sometimes I wish for a little less enthusiasm.

With the death of popular music I assume all our friends young and old are familiar with Nights in White Satin but if not you will justĀ  have to imagine that what you are about to read is really, really funny.

(Also note: my brain appears to think that satin is a kind of velvet)

Dress in white satin

Too soon reaching the end

And those can’t all be moth holes

Take care when you bend

And I want you …

to stay dressed …

My imagination’s already hard-pressed

Probably we would be more modest as a people if we felt more comfortable poking fun at immodesty.

There were two events in the past 10 years or so that really solidified for me the importance of modesty. Before I go on, modesty for me extends to not just wearing the proper amount of clothing, but wearing nice, clean clothing.

The first incident was a visit to Lagoon Amusement park where I was constrained to see much more of a lot of bodies than I have any desire to that. Not to mention the general sloppiness and ill-fitting nature of the clothing. One lady was wearing a shirt with an expletive on it. Classy.

The second incident was the first time I visited Japan. The Japanese population by and large dresses in well-fitted, neat, clean clothing. Pretty much everyone there looks nice, and it was a shock to come back to the States with its sloppy style (not to mention too revealing clothing now often paired with ugly tattoos).

Since then, I’ve tried to up my own wardrobe, which is a bit of a struggle since I’ve always been inclined to dress like a truck driver. Well, late 90’s truck driver who doesn’t tuck in his snap button collared shirt.

I don’t quite know how to explain the importance of modesty, but I’m every day more and more convinced of its importance.
