Contention is a Chain

March 24th, 2025 by G.

I have two kids who have got into a contentious mode with each other.  They fight a lot, and when they do their personality falls away.  All that is left for the time being is the contention.  They cease to be fully-realized humans.

For them, contention is a chain.

And what I’m wondering is, is that just because they are kids, or is it just easier to see in them because they are kids.

I may be wrong, but I think it’s because they are children (kids are baby goats). Depending on their ages they may not be able to see another’s point of view and don’t have enough experience to understand the world outside of themselves. It’s also just a function of immature people living in close proximity–as we bump up against each other sparks fly. Our adult children don’t fight, even when there is a difference of opinion. Mostly they listen to each other, acknowledge their differences and move on. Have patience, your children aren’t finished yet. (I’m so grateful Heavenly Father is patient with me, I’m not finished either!)

I don’t think many grow out of this entirely, merely our threshold for it can change (we’d hope, anyways).
When you see even adults in high conflict, charged emotional situations, it often becomes difficult to see which is behaving worse as they keep reacting to each other. It can indeed become a downward spiral, with neither having a good outcome in the end.

The soul is a spirit and a body working together, when they aren’t working together the candle flame of the soul does not manifest and the body works toward its natural goals without spiritual benefit. We can fuel or extinguish that flame in others and it’s vital, by joining a doom spiral we are killing ourselves and others, temporarily.
