Book of Mormon Retrospective

December 19th, 2024 by G.

What did you get out of reading the Book of Mormon this year?  I’ll probably ask it again at the end of the year when we have more time to think about it.  That’s what we talked about in Sunday School.  It was very nice.

Book of Mormon

For me

  1.  Thinking about the oddity of having the Three Nephites around  brought me to realize to a deeper extent the miracle that the Book of Mormon is.
  2. A testimony-building deepening of my engagement with the Book of Mormon as an ancient compiliation of ancient historical records.
  3. A new understanding of the Tree of Life vision as an experience that is supposed to be repeated.  “Enjoy to the end.”

I read through a non-standard version of the Book of Mormon (https://www.amazon.com/Stick-Joseph-Hand-Ephraim-Paperback/dp/1951168607) for my personal study, and what I came away with was a greater respect for the absolute Jewishness of the record, and how incredibly pervasive Isaiah’s thought and teachings were to the Nephite/Lamanite people.
Do I think that this version is revelatory in the way that the original translation was? No. But it did help me understand certain quirks of Joseph’s translation better.
