Next to Your Skin

Inspired by the conference theme on wearing your garments–
To riff on Chesterton, everyone has an identity. When they reject an identity, they don’t cease to have one. They just start conforming to a different one.
You always dress to belong. The only question is, to what group do you dress to belong
The neat thing about the garment is that it allows multiple layers of identity. You can superficially have a pretty different identity than another Latter-day Saint. And superficial stuff is quite important, especially for clothing! But if you wear the garment of the priesthood underneath, you still are who you are at heart.

In my Freshman English class (long, long ago, in a galaxy far away) we read an essay by, if my memory is correct, Allison Lurie on the language of clothing. I hadn’t seriously thought about the statements I was making with my clothing until then.
I like the kinship feeling of identifying other garment wearers in public places, when the garments are just visible under clothing.
