Ugh Primary Songs

June 16th, 2023 by G.

Newfangled Primary songs are one of my pet peeves.  I hate planned obsolescence and avoidable generational disruption.  My kids had to learn Give Said the Little Stream from me, consarnit.

Have mercy, Primary music leaders.

Whuh? They don’t teach Give Said the Little Stream in your Primary? Okay, I can see where some of the Primary songs might be a little obsolete, but there are so many good ones! And Give Said the Little Stream is pretty easy to pick up, as well as being widely applicable.

. . . I’m also THAT pianist. You know, the one who chooses the most appropriate hymn for the occasion whether or not the class knows it. I stubbornly refuse to compromise on this (most of the time) because while the hymns we sing the most are good, there are some real hidden gems in the sealed portion of the hymnbook.

At least the Primary still sing something. That puts them ahead of most other children. And since 2018, ahead of most priesthood quorums.

Give Said the Little Stream is one of our Primary’s favorites. However, there are plenty of lovely songs that they do not know and that makes me sad because I still remember the songs I sang in Primary from 60 years ago. They teach the doctrines of the gospel so sweetly and give children (and adults) something to hum or sing when faced with temptation or unwelcome thoughts.

Give Said the Little Stream has been a favorite since I was a child.

My opinions on Popcorn Popping are less charitable.

But nothing is as sublime as listening to kids scream Scripture Power! at the top of their lungs, with feeling and sincerity. That must have been how David danced before the Lord.

Zen, you can’t bring up Scripture Power when people are here to gripe about newfangled Primary songs. It’s not in the book!
