Deacon watching

June 11th, 2023 by G.

You are deacon watching

Your son sustains with his arm straight up, fist clenched, like a black power salute.

Time to pass.  2 11-year olds get up, walk up, turn, walk back, sit down, gesticulate, then get back up.  The priest grins.

When I was a very young kid, one of my earliest memories of attending church was seeing a guy in our ward who would sustain people by raising both hands. I thought that was funny and did it for a few years myself.

Ever since going to the temple, I’ve see sustaining from a different perspective, but I’ll leave it at that.

11-year-olds can be deacons now?

It’s been that way since 2019. Deacons, teachers, and priests are now ordained in January of the year when they would turn, respectively, 12, 14, or 16 instead of after their birthdays. The main intent behind this is to keep people in the same age cohorts together longer.

The girls now also advance in their Young Women classes under the same criteria.
