Human Error

Think about all the safety measures and automation around us. Here’s the sad truth.
Eliminating human error means eliminating human agency.
Obvious moral choices aren’t the only meaningful choices out there. Any choice that involves competing values, balancing efficiency and safety and different goals, is a powerful exercise in agency. People need to make these choices even if, especially if, they will sometimes fail.
Safetyism is one functionary, one choice, one time.

Freedom to be stupid is inseparable from freedom to be genius.

Agency is the ability to enact your apprehended will. This does not mean that all endeavors will be unqualified successes, but that the mind and body are capable of responding in kind to the will. It means the ability to repent, to rethink, to OODA. Therefore consequence is a sine qua non of agency. Only a world of meaningful differentiated feedback and results can produce agency.
Agency is furthermore a compact between the present and the future (sliding of course ever back into the past). Acts acquire meaning when they connect a desire with an end state, even if the end state is not the projected one.
Agency is intimately entwined with creativity and the effectual coming-forth of a new world. In the tension between what is and what may be, we meet the collision of reality (that which resists) and will (that which overcomes).
