Our Friend Kent Budge Has Died

November 14th, 2022 by John Mansfield

Kent died Thursday, November 10. The last entry on his Wanderlusting the Jemez blog, entered Sunday four days earlier, expressed hope in the progress of his recovery from his accident. Tuesday, though, he suffered a pulmonary embolism, and his body failed.

Death holds another captive until the resurrection frees us all.

I have no idea how I missed this yesterday.

As some of you know, Kent was a very active participant on the blog. His “Vader” posts and comments walked the line between insight and being very funny.

One of my cherished memories is a frosty New Mexico day where Vader, JM, and I had a long talk about life at a local landmark restaurant. Since then we’ve gone our separate ways. Vader now the furthest of us all.

I am very glad the letter I sent him in the hospital told him some of what he has meant to me over the years.

He was a real friend, and noble.

Had no idea he was Vader. This is very sad.

I didn’t know Kent Budge, but “Vader” will definitely be missed.

You may recall that Vader wrote of working at Death Star Inc. Well, Kent Budge really did. He was a physicist at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Kent’s explanation of “Vader” ten years ago was that some security officer complained about him blogging in his own name, so to keep the peace at work he started using “Vader.” Then he ran with it to rather good effect.

I enjoyed Kent’s geology posts and Vader’s posts here without connecting the dots. Until we meet again!
