President Romney

October 20th, 2022 by G.

From the JG in 2009:

Potemra thinks its President Romney in 2012. From his lips to God’s ears.
Unless Romney is a squish or would make a bad president. What, I’m supposed to know better than God who should be President?

Tender mercies of the Lord.

Romney is capable, but appears to be firmly pro-Establishment, to the point I consider it a character defect. If he isn’t, he certainly hasn’t shown it.

When things fall apart, I don’t want our fingerprints on it. I want it to be clear, we are not the ones to blame.

In fact, I expect, that the Lord will pull many or all of us from positions of power, before it all goes down. Not that that excuses us from acting in the here and now. And what the Lord takes away, he will later restore ten-fold.

I don’t know if this will even necessarily happen within my lifespan, but this is my prediction.

Being firmly an establishment guy myself (I _liked_ Ike), I can only wish Romney had been elected. I believe the country, and the world, would be in a better place today. Not spectacularly better, but better.

I do think there is something to the idea that Romney would have been tarnished by COVID, striking in the last years of his term. However he responded — however intelligently — it would have given rise to angry criticisms.

Perhaps it is better for him to be known as the enemy of Trump within the Republican Party.

My posting here dwindled to almost nothing after Trump was nominated. I cannot get behind Trump, in which I differ from a lot of the regulars here. Trump has been a disaster for the American constitutional experiment. I prefer to reject Trump rather than reject that experiment. Frankly, I feel bound to reject the GOP rather that reject the constitutional experiment. In none of this am I endorsing Pelosi or the Democratic Party, which regard the Constitution the way I regard a kleenex — useful, but to be discarded once its usefulness has ended.

If we are arguing between a reality TV host, a senile old man, and lukewarm milquetoast, then I propose that the argument has already been lost.

The Establishment is closer, in action, to the Constitutional Kleenex, all in service of their own personal power and projects. This isn’t 20 years ago, alas.

In any case, I regard the Brotherhood here (and for this purpose, you sisters are honorary Bros) as doing more real good than voting Left, Right or otherwise.

I haven’t voted for Trump yet, but the alternatives aren’t extremely compelling either.
