Niceness

February 24th, 2022 by G.

Niceness covering a will to power is terrible. The worst.

Second worst is niceness out of fear. Inoffensive niceness. What I guess you might call slave morality (my definition, I have not read neitzsche).

Notice that both types have niceness is just a tactic.

Niceness coupled with a will to power but not covering it is pretty wonderful. Someone ambitious and a hard charger but who is decent to people, that is the best.

Niceness based on love is also wonderful, also the best. A mother who is careful about your feelings because she loves you, that is great.

I’m a little dubious about trying to be real nice online.  I’m not so sure you can have real love for mass digital identities.

Also, if love, not niceness, is your lodestar, then sometimes being nice still give way to loving truthfulness and loving challenges.

I recently heard Jordan Peterson say something interesting, and it has been on my mind. He was saying that people who wait to speak up until they are safe/secure ie, until they have tenure, spend so long not speaking up, that they get out of the habit. So that when/if they get tenure, they still don’t speak up, because it is ingrained by then.

In contrast, someone like Elon Musk didn’t wait until he was rich to start being outspoken. He was just always that way.

I have as many reasons as anyone else to be careful about what I say, but the thought of neutering myself, is even more horrifying.

“Niceness covering a will to power is terrible.”

Couldn’t agree more.

W.I.C.K.E.D said it was good, too.
