I thought I understood what I was reading until I got to “before they’re ready to defend them.” Now I don’t get it. Could someone please unpack it for me?

I just took a dive into his substack web site. Wow. That guy is a powerful writer.
I like his non-binary thinking, it’s sort of Freakonomics style, wberein he will find and hold up the nugget of truth from someone who is otherwise a dupe of the dark side.

Books, the implied antecedent of the “they” in “they’re” is progressives, and the antecedent of “them” is “the inevitable conclusions of progressive premises”.

Progressive:. We must immediately do X because reason Y
Someone: but reason Y means horrible thing Z
Progressive (who really wants horrible thing Z but isn’t willing to say so yet): that’s the slippery slope fallacy

Ben, yes, I understood the grammatical antecedents. But the whole phrase “before they’re ready to defend them” seems superfluous, or throws off the first part. I don’t see the logic or the connection of the two parts.
The vast majority of progressives don’t understand the logical conclusions of their premises/beliefs/basic-assumptions, nor the natural consequences of their proposals/agendas. Only at a top level, such as Alinsky and his insiders, do they realize the intentional destruction.
Am I correct in thinking the slippery slope is the territory (the arguments) between the premises and the conclusion? Or is it the time period up until the point when progressives _are ready_ to defend their premises/conclusions? Is the speaker redefining “slippery slope”.
What does “before they’re ready to defend them” add? I’m missing the context. There’s some unspoken info/observation which would complete the picture. Duckduckgo can’t seem to find this EDJCB quote.

I’ve seen him use that writing technique on his substack, where you have to read the next few sentences to understand how he meant his provocative lede. And he sometimes does that repetitively in an article.
