Too Big to Fail
November 30th, 2021 by Patrick Henry
Too big to fail and Just in Time manufacturing are examples of businesses doing good for themselves in the short run but setting themselves up for failure in the long run.
We do the same in our personal lives. Spend now, later you wish you had savings.
What would be a similar example of short term thinking for the Kingdom? I think its when we optimize too much for adapting to where the world is at right now so we can be successful at missionary work right now.
In our personal lives, there is the short term peace that comes from giving in to temptation or to worldly opposition. And there is the long term peace that comes from rising above the opposition.

You know what I think of? Those dear souls who are ‘all in’ but don’t pace themselves. “It is not requisite that a man should run faster than he has strength”. We are running a long race, and we don’t actually know the length of the course.
Your examples are also excellent.

“What would be a similar example of short term thinking for the Kingdom?”
Are you asking for examples of church-wide policies/programs type of things, or common local/individual habits and traditions?
I’ve ranted plenty about what I see as sub-optimal (one could also say short-termist) common and ingrained individual behavior, such as arriving at the last minute/second for sacrament meeting, and other things related to how people think of sharing the gospel.

I think we have actually slowly moved away from a “baptisms at all cost” approach to missionary work over my lifetime. Service for its own sake, as a part of a full-time mission for young people, was introduced sometime in the early 1980s. It’s now emphasized more than ever.
With due respects to Mr. Henry, there is no observation he can make that the Lord has not already made, and is slowly nudging the Church in the appropriate direction.

Baptisms at all costs is not what I meant. It’s a good example though.
Very grateful to Mr. Vader for his eagerness to defend the kingdom against all comers, even when there are no comers.
