Blue Collar Ramble

On the sweetness . . .
A strange ward. A woman gets up to speak. It’s a full on blue collar ramble. She’s talking about her alcoholism, taking a shot at her addict exhusband, boasting about her lawn ornaments (!), and talking about service and repentance, all mixed together She says she was floored when they ask her to be Relief Society President. I am in the back laughing and laughing but also crying by the end. It was pure and beautiful.

That reminds me of the time when one of the guys in our ward got up to speak. My brother and I looked at each other with fervent anticipation, then back at the pulpit. Sure enough, his entire talk was boxing analogies, complete with demonstrations of the moves he was talking about. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed that hard (mostly silently) in church before or since. But it was surprisingly spiritual for all that.

I was about to peruse another website, but after G.’s and E.C.’s contributions to my night it feels better to stop with these. Thank you.
