[TIFF Review] From Up on Poppy Hill

We saw it for the first time a few days ago, on John M.’s recommendation.  It is a gem.  We will see it again.  Highly recommended.

I agree, Studio Ghibli usually makes great movies and I enjoyed this one to watch it a couple of times this year. I recommended it to some family members who also liked it very much. I loved the way the young people showed respect for their ancestors who built the things that made their lives possible, even as they were trying to accomplish their own goals and make their own way in life.

Very much agree with all of the above. The scriptural injunction to ‘remember’ is one of the hardest to keep – and the most important. Of course tradition can sometimes ossify, but each generation has to choose what to keep and what to discard – and I fear that the past few generations have discarded altogether too much of the good in trying to root out the bad.
