The Basilisk

Read the Basilisk at your earliest convenience. You should not read it as a horror story.
Don’t give up because of the second letter. Read it until the end. Ask yourself what would possess a woman to write like that?

Wow, that took an unexpected turn. Thank you for sharing this. First letter was incredible or at least lined up perfectly with my thinking.
I’m not even sure what to make of the second letter. It gave me a queer feeling. I don’t know much about faeries but it’s hard to imagine they’d have anything to do with the internet.
By strange coincidence I was just yesterday thinking about the internet and how it was originally known as the “web”, and how the enemy often lets his intention known for those who pay attention.
Here I am enjoying the internet but I imagine we would be better off it didn’t exist. Especially “smart” phones which are pocket palantirs with a direct connection to evil—that many give them to their children.

Thanks for sharing this- this was a good read.
Assuming Bridget isn’t making fun of her uncle here, I would diagnose nihilism.
Funny enough, I’ve noticed this kind of nihilistic rhetoric being expressed by environmental activist types on occasion. Overall, this reminds me of Jordan Peterson speaking of the attitude of railing against reality or hating creation expressed by Cain and the Columbine boys (although, I am poorly paraphrasing here). He talks about this in his biblical lectures on YouTube- I would highly recommend seeing it if you haven’t already.

G is of course speaking quite literally when he asks what would “possess” a woman to write like that, and the answer ain’t “fairies”!
By coincidence I am currently reading an old horror novel from the eighties about a secret cult dedicated to exterminating mankind and replacing us with a new species: the Anti-man. The cult members are themselves human, of course, and a central theme of the novel is the question of what could possibly motivate a man or woman to pursue such a goal.

The Author is a major part of the “Dark Mountain Project” which is basically “The Benedict Option” for secular far-left liberals (with a very strong environmental bent) who think society is too far gone and all they can do is a left-wing version of “Going Galt” and wait for society and the environment to completely collapse, and then emerge amongst the wreckage.

Mixed feelings about the piece – some interesting points well-made, but somehow it didn’t seem fully sincere to me. And more like an essay than a fiction.

If the author is a secular leftist, then it appears he is mocking both spiritual Christians and spiritual “new-agers.”
It reminds me of how South Park and Saturday Night Live both had an episode where a character actually said that the true religion was “the Mormons.” The mockers ostensibly can’t conceive of it possibly being true, and present it as ridiculous _en se_.

Is there any group of people who doesn’t think society is going to collapse at this point?
As far as I can make out, pretty much everyone assumes “SHTF” sooner or later. It is such a huge part of our popular entertainment. Everyone can see the collapse around them. Yet most people don’t seem very prepared for it.

What would possess a woman to write like that? A particularly cruel and subversive demon. Perhaps Moloch.
On another note, I still do not have a phone, nor do I intend to get one. It seems like too good a way to lose touch with reality. At least with a laptop I can choose to turn it off.

That second letter, by the end of it, was chilling. It’s not just the author’s course of action, but that course in the context of the first.
Still:
“All things work together for the good of them that love Him.”
The Internet, too, shall bow and confess.

The first letter reminded me of Screwtape a little bit. The second letter reminded me of something I’ve long thought, “It’s just as evil to teach people to hate themselves as it is evil to teach them to hate other people.”

Am I the only one who realizes the entire thing is a work of fiction?
