Knowledge is a Form of Love
March 17th, 2016 by G.
Knowledge is a form of love. Knowledge without love is like sex without love.
Knowledge without love can happen, but only by an act of evil will preventing the soul from taking its natural course. Even flogged schoolboys come to love Latin.
The glory of God is intelligence. Intelligence is knowledge with love. Intelligence is knowledge with spiritual participation. It is not necessary to farm a landscape to love it. Farming is physical participation, but there is also spiritual participation.

Surely this depends on how inherently lovable the object of knowledge is. Do oncologists ever come to love cancer?

One suspects they do, a bit. In any case, knowledge of cancer involves knowledge of the natural workings too.

For some reason the phrase “fierce love of the oncologist for the tumor” popped into my head.
I think G.’s muse should have turned left at Albuquerque.

I have never had that kind of conversation with an oncologist, but I have met epidemiologists who obviously had a sneaking admiration for the objects of their study.

The phrase “knowledge is power” has long annoyed me. Not because it is untrue, but it reflects a very wrong, perverted perspective about knowledge.
