Curse You, Mormon! You’ve Foiled Me Again.

August 24th, 2009 by G.

I was partway through elaborating a beautiful theory about how the heavily Christian content in 1 and 2 Nephi and Jacob was either Mormon’s (1) interpolation or (2) his misreading as a result of language change and the drift in the meaning of glyphs or (3) an example of the usual practice of attributing one’s own insights to revered predecessors — when I remembered that Mormon stuck in the Small Plates of Nephi without any editing.

I don’t know why (2) is ruled out. Mormon may not have edited the small plates, but he may well have copied them, and copied them using different glyphs.

I had always assumed there was some interpolation on the part of the modern translator going on. Actually, don’t we know for certain that at least one phrase (“or in other words out of the waters of baptism” or something like that) was definitely inserted by JS?
