The Heavens Declare the Glory of God

February 27th, 2014 by G.

The heavens declare the glory of God.

It is an old truth that becomes new every time you go out in the twilight, or see the sky on a clear night, or witness the dawn.

I am half-persuaded that urbanization and the indoor life tracks with the rise of atheism.

“Now when first Vingilot was set to sail in the seas of heaven, it rose unlooked for, glittering and bright; and the people of Middle-earth beheld it from afar and wondered, and they took it for a sign, and called it Gil-Estel, the Star of High Hope.”

The Guide and I into that hidden road
Now entered, to return to the bright world;
And without care of having any rest
We mounted up, he first and I the second,
Till I beheld through a round aperture
Some of the beauteous things that Heaven doth bear;
Thence we came forth to rebehold the stars.

“…urbanization and the indoor life tracks with the rise of atheism”

– It makes it harder, but those of us lucky enough to live in leafy suburbs (even though less than a mile from the centre of a large city) have more than sufficient natural stimulus if we make the effort and look around.

On the other hand, I would have seen the aurora borealis for the first time and only time in my life, yesterday late evening, if only there had not been so much light pollution and so many buildings between myself and the Northern horizon…
