They Can Stick It
On the sweetness of Mormon life–
I am waiting to pass the sacrament. Our newest deacon explains to me in whispers why “Rock of Ages” is wrong for an opening hymn.
Bishop calls a young lady up to the stand. We wonder why, and it looks like he does too, because when she gets there he pauses awhile. He tells everyone how well she and her brother and another gal in our ward did in the high school’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (they were Helena and Oberon and Titiana respectively). Really something, he said. Really something, the way they talked so loud even a deaf old plumber like him could hear. He stops, thinks for a bit, and then awards her a Young Women’s medal he’s been holding in his hand.
No youth being available, Bishop gives the youth talk. Its 20 minutes on household finance. The other talks heavily quote Elder Holland’s “None Were With Him.”
Sunday School Teacher asks about Mormons being held to a higher standard. A sister says she’s sick of being held to a higher standard by her neighbors and family and their constant questions and whispers and etc. and etc. just because of the faith. If people don’t like that I’m Mormon, she says, they can stick it. Teacher nods sagely. “Sister, can I refine that thought a bit?”
We talk about Zion. I summarize Nate Oman’s post on the double-mindedness of the Utah saints, which ties much of the lesson’s themes together. The stick-it sister says ‘VISITORS WELCOME is written in metal or stone.” Another recommends sending Elder Holland’s video to friends.

It’s amazing how our Church survives with amateurs leading the way, eh?
The 1st Counselor in the Bishopric (his second round in the bishopric) still struggles after 7 years of experience, to get a Sacrament program organized properly, or to give the right announcements, or…..
As high priest group leader, I find myself teaching Gospel Doctrine frequently, because our instructor also has a stake calling, which we were promised would not affect Sundays. In talking about Spiritual Gifts, I go out and get Pres Cannon’s full talk on spiritual gifts and quote extensively from it (including his call to repentance), and also from Elder McConkie’s Apr1980 Ensign talk on what we need to do to prepare for this
“Final Glorious Gospel Dispensation.” It always makes people think to quote him asking: if we do not have faith to heal the sick, how do we expect to move mountains?
For Priesthood, I have to make sure we have sufficient people to clean the temple on Tuesday, AND to work in the bishop’s storehouse. Not the first time I’ve had to remind the stake that they have double billed us on the same day.
I’m wondering if things work this smoothly in Enoch’s Zion….
