Art for the Seven Days
February 19th, 2023 by G.
My wife knows an artist who is doing a piece for each of the days of creation. She showed me pictures of the completed ones. They are lovely.
But, my wife said, she is having trouble with the seventh day. How do you portray rest?
At the time I racked my brain for a suggestion and nothing came.
Later an image popped into my head.
There is an ideal landscape. Trees, streams, waving grass, animals, flowers, golden sun, clouds. Maybe a little beach and the golden ocean on the left bottom corner. In the distance there is a mountain range just far enough that there is a hint of haze about it. One of the mountains has been carved into a throne facing towards us and the landscape. On it is sitting God.

This was a question I had on my mission. Sure, Sunday is a day of rest, but it was my busiest day!
So, we need to ask ourselves, what is it a rest from? Mere exertion? I hope not. I just finished a workout, that was immensely refreshing. Likewise, I am not above a walk or a hike on the Sabbath.
Instead, I suggest it is a rest from the ways of the World. It is a time to refresh, and to renew. Sharpen the Saw, in term of Covey’s Seven Habits. Rest from the pressures, temptations, philosophies and influence of the World, and to drink deeply from the Living Waters, and to feast on His Word.
There is a story attributed to Jesus, paraphrased, that he saw a man working on the Sabbath, and he said to him, Blessed are you, if you know what you are doing and are living the deeper meaning in the Law. But cursed are you, if you are merely being disobedient.

I agree with Zen, that resting on the Sabbath is resting from our weekday, worldly labors.
D&C 59:10, the Lord said, “. . . this is a day appointed unto you to rest from your labors . . .” One day when I read that I realized that He didn’t say to rest from ALL labor, and understood that we can be engaged in HIS labor on the Sabbath: sharing the gospel, strengthening family bonds, doing family history, ministering to others, etc. There’s plenty of sacred labor to engage in on the Sabbath if we are willing.
