Brandon Sanderson killed Heavenly Mother
I am currently reading Brandon Sanderson’s most recent tome, Wind and Truth, the final book in the first five book arc of his massive Stormlight Archive. This book is nearly as long as the Old Testament. That is not hyperbole, nor a complaint. 491,000 words vs the Old Testament KJV 609,425 words. Probably the last Sanderson book I will ever read. There were some issues like lame dialogue and bloat, but that isn’t my concern here.
In the story, there is an insane priest named Ishar – imagine something between the Apostle Peter and the Archangel Michael. He is practically a demigod in his own right, with the power to bind connections between people, spirits and things. But he has wandered so far from his original purpose, that he does cruel harm in a world where his heroism is sorely needed. Instead of leading the people against the spiritual harms attacking them, he is aggrandizing himself. And this is all very interesting world and character building. But in the midst of this, LGBTQ+++ messaging is shoehorned in. It is not inclusion, it is advocacy.
Brandon is Ishar.
I do not judge Ishar for what has happened after millennia of torture, nor do I judge Brandon for falling into the same trap as literally every other popular LDS artist, with precious few exceptions. But no one is ever happy selling their soul.
But if Brandon truly is the mad priest Ishar, then what if he did unite gay and lesbian couples? If they created worlds as heterosexual sealed saints, then you would necessarily have worlds where there was no Heavenly Father or no Heavenly Mother. And that is cruel.
Who do we trust? The prophets or the World? It makes no sense to suggest we read between the lines and say the church might change, while fighting against the words of the prophets for the last two centuries. That is the constant refrain of apostates and I really don’t want to hear it. He wants “nuance” but not the plain meaning of what the prophets say.
An appear to Science is fruitless. They may talk about being in the wrong body, but science has neither proven the existence of the soul, nor its pre-existence. And the only experts on that, the Prophets, have steadfastly spoken against all of this. And what of those to transition back? Were they in error before, or afterwards? Exceptionally convenient to forget them. Of course, that is to say nothing of the replication crisis in psychology.
Brandon’s Stormlight books in particular, focus on Mental Health. If Mental Health depends on agreeing with people, then we should see mental health improve as society becomes more accepting. But if Mental Health and LGBT+ (and more particularly the Transgender side) increase together, then acceptance is clearly not helping them. And it is moral and intellectual cowardice to suggest otherwise. Their blood and anguish is on his hands.
He suggests we meet them halfway. But that makes no sense. If transgenderism is right, then we should all be 110%. If it is wrong, we should be 110% against it. Halfway is the most incoherent and intellectually bankrupt position possible.
He says we ought not to judge, quoting Matt 5. But that is a much abused verse. Notably, he didn’t quote the JST version… “but judge righteous judgement”. Judgement of truth and doctrine is essential and it is apostacy to suggest otherwise.
Brandon claims, “It’s a bigger statement not to include queer characters, than to include them”. But that is either shoddy logic or a bait and switch. That doesn’t mean advocacy or shying away from the consequences of actions.
Regrettably, Brandon Sanderson has sold his soul and become just another lame Utah Mormie desperately trying to live in Zion and Babylon simultaneously. But as Nibley was wont to point out, that has never worked once, no not once since the days of Adam.
When the issue at hand was Gay Marriage, then the prophets prophesied that gender confusion would be the result. And time has vindicated the prophets. Since the Family Proclamation was given, we have known that
Further, we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets.
But let me give you a new prophecy, or rather let me expand on an old one. We are told that before judgment begins on the nations, persecution will come on the Saints first. Utah will be “burned over” like Joseph Smith’s area was, but with persecution. And this because too many so-called saints want to live both in the Great and Spacious Building, and on the Strait and Narrow. Utah will be particularly beaten and abused and will be until the Saints can stand firm, on one side of the fence or the other. The middle ground is rapidly disappearing. We will all have to make a choice.
In Isaiah, idolatry was the primary sin condemned. But what is idolatry? The people of his time were careful about doing all the right outward things. But what did they really trust? Trust in the Old Testament is often used in place of the word, Faith.
The fact that idols were made of wood or stone was never the salient fact. They were philosophies people trusted more than God. And they were utterly unable to help the people who trusted in them.
The problem with idols, and false philosophies of men (mingled with scripture) is that they can not save you, or help you. In fact they make things worse.
And that is the problem with Brandon Sanderson.
I was a great fan, but now I have great many books I may no longer need.
The Mad Priest Ishar consoles himself he is helping…. but he is only making things worse.

It shouldn’t be surprising by now, but it nevertheless is, every time. I had actually had Sanderson on my list of authors to check out one of these days, but now he’s just made a laughingstock of himself.

I was in denial about it for a while, but I can’t ignore it now. He wants to advocate for LGBTQ+ and cloak himself in the Church. He has a stronger tie to LGTBQ+ than he does to the actual Gospel.
Time to find some new authors.

I bailed out from Brandon after reading the third Stormlight, and not enjoying it – indeed I found it dull and began skipping.
But I absolutely love the Rithmatist, which was one of the first things he wrote – and have re-read it multiple times (maybe six?).
Sadly, Sanderson will never finish the projected Rithmatist trilogy – partly because he mistakenly put other projects first, and partly because of political correctness. It seems that the backstory to chalklings had a big role for Indians (I suspect some subtle Book of Mormon tie-ins originally), and by the time he started on book two Sanderson had already become cripplingly concerned about PC, which meant that he simply could not touch the subject of Indians in an “acceptable” way.
(Which – on a larger scale – is presumably why Indians have by now essentially disappeared from mainstream media.)
I also tremendously enjoyed the audiobooks of Mistborn – including the Wax and Wayne ones (the first three) – but I noticed that although I enjoyed these a lot, I did not want to re-read them; which is a test for me of whether an author is one of my real favourites.
The only other one of his I re-read was Warbreaker – which I think is superb in every way; and almost overwhelmingly moving in its climax.
So, two of my favourite novels, and a lot of intelligent and witty entertainment from maybe a dozen others, is a pretty good record!
It is annoying that Sanderson has proved to be his own worst enemy as a writer – but fairly early on, he made the decision to be a professional author, treating his own gift as a machine (and handing over much to editors) rather than trying to be the best writer that he could.

Underrated apologetic killshot.

Is this supposed to say ‘homosexual sealed saints’

You could read it as “[in the same manner] as heterosexually sealed saints”.

Zen’s comment “Time to find new authors” was the kick in the pants I needed. It inspired me to finally finish that manuscript.
LDS Alien Romance coming soon.

@ Zen,
I’m working on getting my stories ready to publish, promise! The problem is that I write slowly. The thing is, I want to finish writing a whole series to at least the first draft stage before I send it out into the world, so I don’t end up with massive plot holes I can’t fix before publication.
