Can Science Be an Idol?

Joseph Smith – Matthew 1:22 says
“For in those days there shall also arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders, insomuch, that, if possible, they shall deceive the very elect, who are the elect according to the covenant.” (compare to Matthew 24:24)
I was thinking about that. We don’t really hear very often about ‘signs and wonders’ being performed, or miracle workers, or even false Christs. (I think I might have heard about one in Russia once, but that’s about it).
So it is very possible – even probable – that as we get closer and closer to the Second Coming, this will be more and more fulfilled.
One way it IS being fulfilled now though, I think, is in the idol god of Science. Through science, the world is progressing in wonderful ways – things that no one has ever thought was possible are being done as we speak. We’ve landed people on the moon. We know how to fly. We can cure most diseases and prevent many others. We’ve invented so many different machines and technologies that, in themselves, seem to be miraculous (and they are!) but they also serve to distract people from God and His Son and Their love for us. People worship science, and I think that it is one of those false Christs.
Light and truth is awesome, which means properly understood science is awesome.
Power and capacity and creation and matter are awesome, which means properly understood technology is awesome.
But when someone responds to the birth drop crisis by saying, “No problem, Science will just make artificial wombs!” then yes we are clearly into idol territory.

The list on the sign is so – silly. Non-serious. It means nothing?
Black Lives Matter – of course they do. That’s obvious.
Women’s Rights are Human Rights – again, of course they are, unless you mean to insinuate women aren’t human.
No Human is Illegal – Either this means nothing (nowhere is it illegal to be human) or it means there are no such things are borders, so why even have nations/countries/etc.?
Science is Real – Yes, and??? – science is not a single thing, and Flat Earthers/Young Earth Creationists/Reptile Alien Overlords claim to do “science” as well. No one says “SCIENCE” does not exist. We disagree on what counts as science.
(plus, want to bet the person who posted this sign will claim “THE SCIENCE!” shows there are hundreds of genders)
Love is Love – well A is A, B is B, eggs are eggs, cars are cars. Wow – what a tautology. Unless you mean eros=agape, at which point you’re just babbling nonsense, akin to saying Pablo Picasso is JS Bach.

That exact sign in on my way to church and as I pass it each week I want to put up an addendum that reads “Black lives matter” Except when they’re preborn or conservative.
“Woman’s Rights are Human Rights” Except if she is preborn or wants to be a stay at home Mom.
“No Human is Illegal” unless said human is a constitutional conservative.
“Science is Real” unless it says there are only two genders, or that CO2 isn’t driving climate change.
“Love is Love” unless you’re talking about obeying God’s Law.
