My Father’s Glory, My Mother’s Castle

I highly recommend these books (in translation) and these movies (with subtitles on). By Marcel Pagnol about his childhood in Provence. Very warm and family-focused and even stylish.
The books in particular are good enough to become part of our read-aloud rotation.
Age wise, your family’s average age needs to be at least a few years older than for, say, Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Those are good movies. I did not know they were books.
Last year after 60 Minutes broadcast its bit with the Hundred Billion Dollar Man, I commented at another website, “And to round out my musings, did anyone else think of the husband and wife in My Mother’s Castle disclosing to one another in a time of trouble the savings each had secretly set aside? It’s a very sweet, tender scene.” My words were more oil on the fire for those who like being enflamed. Maybe something can be done with that metaphor about hydrocarbon emollients that soothe some, burn others.
