Via Bruce Charlton, a real find: FadedPage.com, which has a number of excellent digital downloads of 50-year old works.

Unfortunately, only available for our Canadian or unscrupulous reader contingents.   We love our Canadian and unscrupulous readers, don’t we, folks?

The choice of authors on Fadedpage is interesting, too – including the good but currently unfashionable.

For instance; there are a large number by Enid Blyton. Also Nevil Shute – who is a favourite of my wife. Also Somerset Maugham – whom I haven’t read but who, like Shute, was in his time highly-regarded, as well as popular.

Overall, Fadedpage gives the impression of something done well, because done by people with a genuine love of what they are doing!

I went through a phase a few years ago where I read a bunch of Nevil Shute.

He was an excellent example of the now lost middlebrow segment of the market.
