Retrospective on Revelations

January 02nd, 2024 by G.

Joseph Smith said that the book of Revelations is one of the plainest books God ever caused to be written.

Now, me and Brother Joseph are alike as two peas in a pod. Practically twins. But in finding the Book of Revelations easy going, Joseph has one up on me.

That’s what I normally would say anyhow. But after a recent Sunday School discussion I realized the core message is plain and obvious. So much so that we all already know it, which is why we get absorbed in figuring out which 1940s battle tank is represented by which candlestick, etc.

The exceedingly plain message:

  1. The systems of the world are going to get hit with a series of crises they are unable to handle.
  2. There will be great wickedness, allied with the systems of the world.
  3. Christ is God.
  4. God wins, the Saints win, power and beauty and love forever.

You all know that, but you probably also think that you don’t get Revelations. I submit that you do.

It seems that what gets people hung up the most in Revelation is what the beast is: a country or alliance of countries? something else entirely?

Connected to that is the mark of the beast, and the number 666. My dad always thought it significant that when rendered in Roman numerals, 666 = DCLXVI, which is every numeral, occurring once each, below 1,000. And, since Roman numerals have no place value, he thought there was something important going on there as well.

As for me, I just remind myself of what Nephi said, that when Isaiah’s prophecies are fulfilled that we will recognize what he was talking about with hindsight. I feel the same way about Revelation.
