Testimony isn’t Knowledge

Viewpoint: Testimony Is Precious Possession, Greatest Gift - Church News and Events

We often confuse testimony as a statement of our confidence level that certain propositions are correct.  It is not.

Even the devils believe, and tremble.

Testimony is a statement of convictions.  Facts are just facts, but testimony is facts that have soaked with meaning into our core and come to define who we are and where we are going.  A testimony belief is something has that become part of your identity and your direction.

That is why no one bears testimony  that their refrigerator cools food to keep it fresh longer, though probably most of us share that belief.

Testimony is beliefs that have got inside you.

Even primitives are relatively unimpressed by technology just like we quickly adapt to and shrug off new technical marvels ourselves.  These marvles come from the outside and so don’t make that much of an impression.  That is why angels and miracles and visions are doled out so parsimoniously by the Almighty–they come from the outside, so their ROI is low.  True testimony comes from the inside, from the Holy Ghost.

A man was staggering and faint, so a passerby held his hand.  When he still had difficulty holding himself up, another passerby grabbed his other hand.  As he still seemed on the point of collapse, more people grabbed onto his hand but it did not good, he was sagging to the ground, until another man embraced him around the trunk and lifted him up.  The passersby holding the hands are visions, angels, logic, evidences, everything that comes from the outside.  The man holding you around the waist, supporting your weight, is testimony from the Holy Ghost.

From my notebook: “Perhaps instead of calling it Testimony Meeting, we should call it Open Mic; because few people bear pure testimony. Most give sermons, or storimonies, or thankfulmonies, or some other personal expression.” I can tell when someone is bearing pure testimony because, like the disciples on the way to Emmaus, my heart begins to burn within me.
Your analogy is spot-on.
