Sunday School Experiment

February 18th, 2023 by G.

I’m thinking of doing an experiment for Sunday School.

I’m thinking of having everyone pick just one of the stories that we have in the reading from John–

  • The wedding at Cana
  • Nicodemus
  • Driving out the money changers from the temple
  • Healing the nobleman’s son
  • The Samaritan woman at the well

–and and then just focusing on that one story from all sorts of angles. Metaphorically and spiritually but also temporal lessons. Looking at it from the point of view of each person involved. Seeing what it tells us about things past, things present, and the things of futurity.

What do you think?

I am worried that it sounds better in my head than it would work in practice.

I’ve been in lessons where they took that same approach, but in small groups. As long as you bring the class back together with plenty of time to go through people’s insights at the end of the lesson, it usually works quite well. Just make sure you have specific questions in mind for each of your aspects (Metaphorical, spiritual, temporal, etc.), and possibly write them down somewhere so people can refocus if they need to.

I have found that when classes are asked plot-related questions, they tend to be pretty unresponsive. Questions about doctrinal insights tend to do better at prompting discussion.
