Heaven cannot Hold Him
December 25th, 2022 by G.
Our God, heaven cannot hold him,
nor earth sustain;
heaven and earth shall flee away
when he comes to reign:
in the bleak midwinter
a stable place sufficed
the Lord God Almighty,
Jesus Christ.
Your heart can hold Him.
Christmas can hold Him.

I love the Harold Darke setting of this poem. Just listened to it last night. Then had another treat, listening to Jacob Collier’s version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPZn4x3uOac
Listening to Jacob’s virtuosity reminded me of the scene from Chariots of Fire, where the Lydell character says “When I run, I feel God’s pleasure.” I don’t know if Jacob feels God’s pleasure when he is arranging and singing, but I certainly do, while listening to him. So my brain wanderings got a little far afield of your OP, but I also thought-reading the poem again- that my/your/our hearts can hold him, as in grasping onto his love or strength, but that we, nor even the universe, can contain Him, for the Creator is greater than that which He created. Thanks for all your deep and provoking thoughts, about Christmas and etc. And Merry Christmas to you, the other contributors here, and your families.

Personally, I like “Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zz4LBjysReA
but it’s more of an Advent song. Merry Christmas (several days late)!
