What if You Are the Hero
October 14th, 2021 by G.
What if you are the hero farm boy in a fantasy novel, but there is no Dark Lord of Darkness for you strike down, no One Ring to throw into the cracks, not even a Mt. Doom? Just creeping malice and sludge and miasma and mediocrity?

Do some scripture-reading to prepare, then go out to the woods and pray.

Find a dragon somewhere and slay it. Hero’s have dreamed for windmills to tilt at and maidens to rescue for hundreds of years.

Read along with 100 Days of Dante, celebrating 700 years since the poet wrote his epic, after finishing a Philosophy 101 class about various other of the Western philosophers and theologians (soon to be studied in more depth). Ponder where we went wrong, and what the Restoration means. Learn a little about the nature of sin, and then repent. Make your motto ‘Death by Living’. Write about your findings, so that, like Dante, you can hopefully lead others through the dark worldly wilderness someday.

Another tack…
If the farm-boy wants to fight against “creeping malice and sludge and miasma and mediocrity”, then …
Peter Kreeft says: “To win any war, the three most necessary things to know are: (1) that you are at war, (2) who your enemy is, and (3) what weapons or strategies can defeat him.”
Those three things are described at:

(#3, the weapon, is: become saints. I.E., convert yourself, then convert others.)

We don’t deserve a dragon. We don’t deserve a war. We don’t deserve the desolation and famine and struggle and anguish, because that would provide salvation as a side effect and as this nation has turned from God it is now viewed by God with benign indifference.
As individuals we might find the eustress we need as a vitamin for the soul if we seek long and hard for it, but not in any great quantity, not enough to become true saints. Spiritually we have rickets and jaundice, spiritually we don’t have the calcium to form proper teeth. The nutrients are not found in our environment any more than the trace minerals that have disappeared from our food.
There might have been some in Sodom that knew what was coming.

The Doldrums

Milo: But, if you can’t laugh, or think, what can you do in the Doldrums?
Lethargian:#1 Do? Why, you can do (starts to sing) anything, as long as it’s nothing.
Everything, as long as it isn’t anything.
Lethargian #2: So don’t say there’s nothin’ to do in the doldrums.
Lethargian #3: Don’t say we wither away the day.
Both Lethargians: We don’t! (No!), we dawdle a bit and then (Yeah and then we).
Three Lethargians: We loiter a while, and dawdle again.
We gather our strength to start anew!
On all of the loafing and lounging we still have left to do.
Lethargian #4: So don’t say there’s nothing to do in the doldrums, it’s just… Not… True.”
Milo: (Yawns; sleepily) “I can see, you lead a rich and productive life.”
Milo and the Lethargians: “Don’t say there’s nothing to do in the Doldrums.
I’m ready to diddle away the days I am. (We don’t)
I dawdle of this, (Dawdle of this) and then (Dawdle of this).
I loiter a while, (Loiter a while), and dawdle again.(And dawdle and dawdle again).
I gather my strength (Gather strength) to start anew (Start anew).
Milo: On all of the loafing and lounging, I still have left to do.
Milo and the Lethargians: So don’t stay there’s nothing to do in the Doldrums, it’s just… (Yawns) Not… True…
