The Two Ways to Experience a Landscape

June 09th, 2021 by G.

The two ways to experience a landscape are just to see it in the passing moment.  Cherry blossom beauty not meant to stay.

Or to own it for generations, secure that it will always be yours and knowing you are rooted there, will always live there.

I don’t think this second kind of beauty is available to us moderns.  We aren’t secure enough in what we own, and we aren’t tied enough to what we own.

The two kinds of landscapes that call to me are alpine and placid rivers.  I don’t think the two are to be found together anywhere.

Cliffs, beaches, and deserts for me.

At the same time? Because I’m getting an image of desert cliffs along the ocean and it’s cool

To see placid rivers in an alpine setting, I’d suggest starting with the Danube, particularly as it goes through Austria.

“I don’t think this second kind of beauty is available to us moderns. We aren’t secure enough in what we own, and we aren’t tied enough to what we own.”

Increased mobility has it’s upsides as well but I do think there is something important lost in the tradeoff.

For me, rugged mountains and green valleys, and me living somewhere between the two. The only thing that could make it better was if I lived further out in the country on my own property, but I am content in my parent’s suburban acre, with its orchard and its garden and my long-term plans for its flourishing. Our orchard was a bower this spring, and will be better next year (we’re planting more trees this summer/fall, time permitting).

In every place I have lived there came a point years after arriving that I was returning from a trip, and the final dozens of miles felt like a return and gladdened my heart.

I have come to love living on the prairie where I can see from horizon to horizon. But I think in a former life I was a druid because I love trees. (Not serious about a former life, but I hope you understand what I mean.) I love water too, oceans (I was born and raised in San Diego), lakes, rivers, and small streams. There is just something about water and its sound that is renewing and relaxing.
After I married we lived for a time in Skagit county WA where there are tulip and daffodil fields that stretch for miles and are stunning to see each Spring. Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ really did create a glorious earth for us to live on.
