Home Church, Easter 2019

April 22nd, 2019 by G.

We watched the Music and the Spoken Word for today. It was lovely, barring the dresses for the bell ringers. We also tried to watch the Tabernacle Choir’s Easter special but the narration was pageant-tier bad and we could not stomach it. We worked on a song for church. We bore testimony to our children. We talked about our dead loved ones for whom we have the hope of resurrection.

You Don’t Have to Be Temple Worthy

April 15th, 2019 by G.

You don’t have to be temple worthy to have a temple worthiness interview with your bishop.

A prime example of the nameless virtue (#namelessvirtue).

Come to think of it, mortality and the keeping of the first estate are all a giant exercise in the nameless virtue.  A more deliberate method of putting yourself in the way of having all your flaws exposed I cannot imagine.  Maybe that’s the difference between the great majority whose mortal experience is only fetal or as a very young child, and those of us who live longer.  Maybe they knew perfectly well they were going to flub it and volunteered to come anyway, while we minority of optimists felt that it would be a challenge but believed we were up to it.

Tiny Caterpillar Engineers

April 09th, 2019 by MC

[“Instead of just standing there watching, can you get me more popsicle sticks for my important STEM work?”]

Coming home from work today, my daughter greeted me with, “Daddy, look what I made in STEM today!” This year the kids have been attending a 2-day/week homeschool co-op. “STEM” is one of their subjects, and yes, it stands for “Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.”.

What she made was a little caterpillar marionette, constructed of colored fuzzballs on a string, draped from a popsicle stick. It was cute, and I am a proud papa. It’s the perfect sort of activity for a six-year-old. It was also what in a more innocent age would have been called “arts and crafts” rather than anything to do with “STEM.”  (more…)
