America’s Coming 4th Republic

A nice argument, but what really comes after Republic is Empire. You can fight it–you ought to fight it–but can you stop it?

That was pretty solid, except for the line about the next thing being another republic because that’s American culture. I don’t know about that, and like you said, history doesn’t agree.

Empire or an authoritarian force usually occupies a nation after its failed attempt at freedom. It often occurs because the freedom sought is not accompanied with self-restraint nor self-responsibility. Eventually, people seek safety and security over freedom.
This happened in the French Revolution, where chaotic freedom in the hands of mobs, forced a restructuring into an Empire so as to establish some form of stability.
I believe we hit that stage, beginning with the New Deal. We have been an Empire, replacing the Republic with a form of Democracy that has slowly grown ever more powerful, not just within the nation, but globally.
Now, I believe we go to what comes after Empire.

When political disagreements turn into criminal prosecutions, what comes next isn’t everyone having a good laugh about what fools we’ve been. This sort of thing was a big part of the end of the Roman Republic.
