Madonna with Children

There are so many wonderful Madonnas with child. From my LDS perspective, I wish there were also some Madonnas with children.

Me too. In fact I wish the church would publish photos of very large families. Some of the LDS blogging women have them! When all we see are families of 1, 2, at the most 4 children we begin to believe that’s the expected norm. Children are our greatest treasures! We should be having as many as we can.
(No shame to those who can’t have children; one of my grandmothers wanted 12 but was blessed with only 2. Our daughter greatly desires marriage and children, but hasn’t found anyone or been found by anyone. Good thing we’re judged by the desires of our hearts.)

There are some images of Mary with infants Jesus and John the Baptist. For instance, by William-Adolphe Bouguereau. He also has a number of mothers with infants.

Zen, unless I’m mistaken, the image in the post is a pencil drawing of a detail from Bouguereau’s painting Innocence. I’ve posted the original before myself.

I think it appeals to Mormons because it fits the iconography we’re used to — naturalistic, no halos, etc. Some of Carl Bloch’s work is popular for the same reason.

WJT – you are, of course, exactly right. Can’t believe I didn’t notice it.
