Pushing Up

There is a point in a man’s life when he sees a weedy gawky nerdboy teen trying to do push-ups, and in the man’s eyes the moisture starts.

This is the meaning of ‘stripling’, as in Helaman’s stripling warriors.

Sometimes those tears are of joy and respect. Other times, they are of sadness wondering where we’ve gone wrong to raise such a weak generation.

We have several of those in the karate class I help teach. I try really hard to encourage them to stay – martial arts are wonderful for developing the spirit as well as grace, strength, and balance in the body.

Sute – I take exception to your comment–please don’t be too quick to judge. We have four sons, one of them, the youngest, has always been stick thin and no matter what he does he can’t gain weight. He’s 6’4″ and weighs about 165. While growing up I had him to the doctor numerous times to check that everything was okay. Nothing wrong, just a skinny dude. He made it through Army recruit training, combat medic training, and is now married and owns a home, doing all the remodeling and updating on his own. He is still stick thin and struggles with certain exercises, but he’s hard working and an interesting, talented young man. Sometimes it’s not the guy’s fault and I’d trade metabolism with him any day!

That kind of metabolism can be hard on a woman’s fertility and childbearing. We are all of us glad you don’t have it, especially your son.

Rozy read the first sentence and apply it in your case. No hard, right? For the second, if you think there’s never a reason to be sad about declining physical capability of many modern day youth, then we can agree to disagree.

Sute, you’re right; it was just the Mamma Bear in me.
