As my brother said while watching fireworks over the weekend (we sneaked up onto the Institute roof, because my brother is a rebel at heart),
“There’s nothing more American than blowing things up and evading taxes!”
He’s not wrong . . .
Today, we continue a family tradition in a smaller way: a pancake breakfast. It began as a local Scout troop’s fundraiser, then became our Stake YM/YW fundraiser, and this year would have been its 51st year running, but it got cancelled. A few years ago, we fed 2,000 people pancakes, eggs, bacon/sausage, and hash browns off the griddles Dad made himself 30 years ago. Now, we’re down to a select group of family and friends, but the tradition lives on.
May God bless and preserve our nation – especially in a time when widespread repentance is so needed!

Because my dad was the Scoutmaster/header-upper of the whole thing after the founder of the pancake breakfast got too old, and no one stepped up to take his place now that he’s getting older. And honestly, it was getting to be a bit overwhelming for our family to shoulder the bulk of preparations, since we have most of the necessary equipment, which needs to be organized and cleaned before and after, etc., etc. Dad was essentially spending a week around the breakfast preparing and then cleaning up, with no real holiday.
