Spiritual Intuitions regarding Sex, Love, Marriage, and Family

(Non-LDS) Owen Cyclops.  May his tribe increase.

We shouldn’t take this as a chance to preen though.  We have been given a precious treasure of knowledge.  What are we doing with it?

Also of interest, this other recent thread:

Somewhat Charlton-like.

“Somewhat Charlton-like.”

But I haven’t the first clue what this post means! Is the reader supposed to follow the Twitter links to understand (I can’t – not a member).

The links point to thread of Twitter posts that draw various connections that show “mormonism” is on to something common in human culture (love, marriage in eternity) and links Joseph Smith with being a modern version of a type of Tibetan prophet of sorts– or at least his story fits the archetype of one, even if he doesn’t teach exactly Tibetan theology.
Short version

Bruce, I think you can read it without signing in. I could.

I read these without a Twitter account

Sorry, ol’ bean. I meant that cyclops’ approach to Restoration theology has some things in common to yours, viz., intuition, and the family.

I noticed on my mission that most laypeople had no problem at all with the idea of marriage continuing after death. It was only those who were highly active in their legacy Christian churches (especially clergy) who reject the idea of marriage in the next life.

cyclops also rightly pointed out that “marry” and “given in marriage” — in the referenced scripture passage — are _verbs_, and hence the condition of those who marry before that point in time is not being addressed.

I don’t know why this guy has to use Twitter as the medium for these long-form posts instead of getting a blog like a normal person! (I guess it’s a generational thing. My parents see my blogs and ask why I don’t just write a book or two.)

His collection of American religion threads here is worth digging into:

He does indeed cover a lot of Charltonian ground, such as the idea that otherwise intractable theological problems can be solved by changing one’s basic metaphysical assumptions.

He even has a thread about the surprising discovery that most churches officially believe that the Jehovah of the OT is the Son, not the Father, but no one talks about it. I remember Bruce posted about the same thing many years ago.

It was fun to browse around owen cyclops’ twitter feed. (Yes, it’s possible to do without an account.) Very interesting thinker/seeker. I wonder if he will think himself into the church, but don’t think it matters. Here, or There, now or later. Another interesting thread is about Yahweh/Jehovah of the Old Testament being Jesus, a thought he’s never encountered before, but which shows up in several faith traditions in one way or another.

The mainstream creedal beliefs about the nature of the Trinity/God tend to confuddle the Jesus = Yahweh idea.

My understanding is that devout mainstream Christians (Catholics + Protestants, I dunno about Orthodox) think of the “Trinity/God” as 3 manifestations of 1 being…. “God” being Father. and Son, and Holy Spirit simultaneously.

They mostly do but they are not supposed to. That is a credal heresy called modalism
