Man and Woman Virtue Sets

June 18th, 2021 by G.

Inspired by friend of the JG WJT, lets apply virtue set concepts to some of our work with manhood and womanhood.

I’ve tried my hand at capturing the essence of man and woman before.  Never perfectly.

Women are love (unconditional love), men are glory (earned love).

Men are agents, women are ends.

My favorite: Every man a holy pirate king.  Every woman a luxury and a necessity.

Glory is clearly a hot virtue, its hard to say where love fits in.  Being an agent is a hot virtue, being an end, its hard to say where it fits in.  But for me what’s interesting is my favorite one.  My ideal man and my ideal woman are both combinations of hot and cool virtues  (I more and more think that the synthesis of a hot and cool virtue pair is the only actual virtue).

Interesting to see what the full virtue charts look like.

I mentioned before how strange it is that the opposites tend to be found together.  The high maintenance drudge, super self-preoccupied but also fussing fussing fussing, is basically the ‘Karen.’  Still, I’m not very satisfied with this full virtue set.  I don’t think my vices capture very well the full range that the virtues do.

For it is, it is, a glorious thing to be a Pirate King

Considering the set Holy / Pirate King, it is worthwhile to remember the two titles given in the temple just as the Endowment is starting.

But that also brings to mind on of my recent discoveries in Isaiah; parallel passages have a temporal focus and a spiritual focus. That is what I see in that virtue set. In the vices you presented, I see sinful expression of one aspect, or both.

“Those holding the fullness of the Melchizedek Priesthood are kings and priests of the Most High God,”

A completeness of power, both temporal (kings) and spiritual (priests). It is interesting that we are supposed to become like Christ, and Christ will have all enemies bow the knee. If we are to become like him, we must also do this… which is mind-boggling.

The mathematician side of me, looks at these virtue sets, and imagines an arrow either aligned on the virtue axis, the vice axis or in between. The closest we can get to the virtue axis, is what we can imagine. We can get closer than we can understand. Thus, the word of the Prophet Joseph, ‘A man is saved no faster than he gains knowledge’. So I think we are doing good here, coming to a greater understanding.
