Smarter Politics

I’m no fan of Romney. Among his other failings, he hasn’t been very astute politically.
But credit where credit is due, this Romney-Cotton proposal to raise the minimum wage while verifying legal employment is smart politics, to the extent that there can be smart politics among the ruins.

Is it smart because it’s a compromise? Where in the constitution is government given responsibility or authority to set wages for private businesses? The smarter thing to do is to return to the founding principles of limited government and let the free market take care of itself. (That favorite country of the the leftists, Denmark, has no minimum wage laws!)

For forty years now every new hire has had to present documentation showing eligibility to work, but with this proposed law this time they’ll really mean it?

Roxy, and where in the constitution does it say your right to work is dependent on government approval. That’s the most dangerous anti liberty concept that everyone just goes along with because it unites anitimmigration, labor unions, and regulatory statist bureaucrats.
Two bad concepts, married in one law. Romney isn’t the right standard barer for liberty. He might make Utah look good to the nation, but we don’t need the nations approval. We need to remind them of first principles of liberty.
The last thing

Libertarians, ugh.
Rozy, a senator taking the Constitution seriously would be hilarious. I heartily endorse.

Raise the minimum wage to $20. It would naturally stop a lot of illegal immigration. Much harder to undercut American workers at that price.

What would stop an employer of unauthorized immigrants from paying the immigrants a sub-minimum wage? A $20 minimum wage would drive up the incentive to bypass the regulated labor market and hire more unauthorized immigrant labor.

@John You make an excellent point. The laws are irrelevant when they’re not enforced. The house is on fire and we’re discussing the best lock to install on the door.
