More from the End of the Book of Mormon
When people point to all the natural disasters and wars and coups and such happening around the world as proof that we live in end times, I have had my doubts. Don’t modern communications mean we would be much more aware of such things, so the increase would only be apparent but not real?
Although other scriptures use different language, I was interested that Moroni said the Book of Mormon would come
in a day when there shall be heard of fires, and tempests, and vapors of smoke in foreign lands;
And there shall also be heard of wars, rumors of wars, and earthquakes in divers places
On the other hand, some things he describes as actually happening, not just being heard about
the blood of saints shall cry unto the Lord, because of secret combinations and the works of darkness. . . .
there shall be great pollutions upon the face of the earth; there shall be murders, and robbing, and lying, and deceivings, and whoredoms, and all manner of abominations; when there shall be many who will say, Do this, or do that, and it mattereth not, for the Lord will uphold such at the last day
I’m assuming those pollutions are moral pollutions. Environmental pollution is not a mental category that existed anciently.
The bit about “Do this, or do that, it mattereth not, for the Lord will uphold such at the last day” is “a hit, a very palpable hit.” All the people who cry out against judgment, that is what they are in favor of.

I don’t see why the pollutions Moroni mentioned can’t be both moral and environmental. Smoke from fires and volcanic eruptions are pretty straightforward, but if his view of the future included seeing oil spills, poorly managed industrial waste, and all the trash billions of people have been able to produce, then of course such pollution would be noteworthy. It’s not unlike John in Revelation describing 1/3 of all the fish in the sea being killed during the events of the last days.

1815 – eruption of Mt Tambora. VEI 7, highest in modern history. (Krakatoa was a 6.)
1816 – year without a summer in Northern Hemisphere.
1823 – Book of Mormon revealed to JS.
1827 – BoM plates delivered to JS.
1830 – BoM published in English.
So, yeah, the vapor of smoke from Tambora, which went around the world, was still spoken of, and heard of, throughout those years.

The War of 1812, June 1812 – Feb 1815, would also have been spoken/heard of during 1823-1830.
