Elizabeth Pack Mansfield 1970-2018
Elizabeth Pack Mansfield died Thursday morning, October 11, 2018 following a difficult year facing cancer. She was born June 1, 1970 in Provo, Utah and lived her first few years in Orem, Utah, and then in Los Alamos, New Mexico. She graduated with the Los Alamos High Class of ’88, and went on to study molecular biology, receiving a BS from Brigham Young University and an MS from Johns Hopkins University. She served as a missionary in southern Germany and Austria for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 1991-1993, and she married on August 18, 1994. She made her homes as a married woman in Baltimore; Los Angeles; Livonia, Michigan; Damascus, Maryland; and North Potomac, Maryland from 2009 until her death.
Two of her life-long interests were soccer and music. She competed on her high school and college’s teams, joined with adult recreational leagues in LA and Michigan, and coached several children’s teams. Everywhere she lived, she was a violinist in a school or community orchestra, including the Frederick Symphony Orchestra 2008-2017. She felt a responsibility as a musician to not become someone who used to play, to teach, and to organize performances, sometimes drawing in people who had lost touch with the musical part of their lives.
She is survived by her husband John R. Mansfield; her six children Anson John, Joseph Abraham, Samuel Allen, John Robert III, Michael Elijah and Miriam Elizabeth. Also her parents Russell T Pack and Marion Myrth Hassell Pack of Los Alamos; her sister Miriam Pack of Peoria, AZ; and her five brothers John (Sharee) of Flint, MI; Nathan (Mary Lynn) of Las Cruces, NM; Allen (widower of Erin K) of Centennial, CO; Quinn (Erin Marie) of Ellington, CT; and Howard (Whitney) of Cortez, CO.
The family will be receiving friends from 8:30-10:30AM on Saturday, October 20th in the Kentlands chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 16 Kent Gardens Cir, Gaithersburg, MD 20878 where funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville, MD. On behalf of Elizabeth, flowers may be sent to the church or in lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to WBJC, the Baltimore radio station broadcasting classical music.

I pray you’ll be blessed with experiences where the veil is thin and you can continue to feel closeness with your eternal companion.
She sounds like she added to and built a great legacy.

If you need some philosophy on loss and grief, the Enchiridion by Epictetus, has helped me. That work is not sufficent in itself, but when read in gospel light, I found a wonderful synthesis.

So sorry to hear of your loss. Elizabeth was an absolute joy to all who knew her, and very special to be friends with.
She will be sorely missed. However, I am glad that her suffering is over. I know she is where she needs to be now.

I also went to high school with Elizabeth. Having a locker next to hers one year, I still remember how she was always so smart and cheerful. Every time I saw her throughout the year. That combination is too rare the days! An inspiring individual. I’m so glad she was part of your life, too, as you are reading this. I hope her gentle and perceptive wit inspires you to be just as subtle, determined, joyous.
