Inexpensive Heat Absorbing Glass

May 02nd, 2012 by John Mansfield

A package of heat absorbing glass arrived, which I will use for observing the solar eclipse on Sunday, May 20. For those interested, I bought it from Surplus Shed an optics surplus outfit in Maidencreek, Pennsylvania. I ordered on Thursday and received on Tuesday ten filters 45mm in diameter and 3mm thick for $14 plus $5 for shipping. Other sizes are available; type “heat absorbing” in the site’s search box. It seems to be what I want: slight greeen tinge, notable difference in transmitted heat when placed between my palm and an incandescent bulb with only a slight attenuation of visible light.

Central air conditioners form a common feature in most of the houses of the country. Such heat absorbing devices plays a major role in filtering, cooling and dehumidifying the air. There are many factors that have to be considered while making any worthy purchase. Rating of energy efficiency and initial cost are some of the many factors that have to be considered before making any notable buy. As there are a lot of associated considerations, so making a necessary procure is quite a demanding task.

Wow, that was quick! When someone, somewhere mentions heat absorbing glass, this spambot wastes not an hour finding it. It makes those scary movies with omniscient CIA surveillance seem plausible.

Except I’m not sure CIA is as competent as air conditioner manufacturers.

Absorbing the heat is important. Absorbing the UV is also important, though. Ordinary window glass should help a lot.

I’ll be observing the eclipse through a telescope with a reflecting filter specifically designed for safe observation of the Sun. For the Venus transit also.
